Joseph Adler, partner with the Toronto firm Hoffer Adler LLP, focuses on corporate and commercial law as well as franchising and distribution, intellectual property law, and cross-border trade.

He graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics for commerce in 1983, a BA in religious studies in 1984, and earned his Bachelor of Laws from Western University in 1987. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1990.

Mr. Adler went on to receive a Master of Arts degree in religious studies from the University of Toronto in 1997 and was awarded a certificate of completion in advanced Gestalt leadership in psychotherapy from the Gestalt Institute of Toronto in 2016.

He serves as legal counsel for Canadian, American and other foreign franchisors doing business in this country as well as Canadian franchisors doing business in the U.S., Europe and other countries.

Mr. Adler is a Registered Trademark Agent whose clients include various multi-unit franchisees and franchisee associations.

He has published articles and has spoken on a variety of franchising topics for the Canadian Franchise Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the American Bar Association Forum on Franchising, and the International Franchise Association.

Mr. Adler is the Canadian representative on the International Franchise Lawyers Association, and is general counsel and past secretary, director and board member of the Canadian Franchise Association as well as a member of its Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee. He is a member of the International Trademark Association as well as the Canadian, American and International Bar Associations. He is also a member of the Forum on Franchising for the American Bar Association.
