International LLM provides a more global view of law

Toronto litigator Sarah O’Connor has convocated from Queen Mary University of London with a Master of Laws in international business.

O’Connor, principal with O’Connor Richardson Professional Corporation, says she joined the LLM program in 2012, taking courses on topics such as international regulation and protection of multinational enterprises, access to treatment and malpractice litigation, and legal and ethical issues in reproduction.

She completed the program in October 2014 and travelled to London last week to attend her convocation ceremony held at the Barbican Centre.

"The ceremony was awe-inspiring," O'Connor says. "Princess Anne, Chancellor of the university, was there and gave a lovely speech about the British standard of higher education."

She tells that an exchange she did at the University of the West Indies while she was in law school sparked her interest in international education.

"I want to have a more worldly view of the law,” she says.

O’Connor received her LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the bar in 2005. For the last 10 years she has represented individuals, small- and medium-sized corporations in litigation before the Superior Court of Ontario, Ontario Court of Appeal and the Federal Court of Canada, as well in various administrative tribunals.

She says her practice is a mix of corporate/commercial and civil litigation. She also handles state accountability, trademark and sexual disease litigation as well as landlord/tenant disputes.

The firm also offers virtual, in-house counsel options for businesses that are not in need of full-time lawyers but that desire the advantages of having a lawyer at the ready.
