A last-minute getaway after a long, cold winter may be in the plans for some, but don’t forget about travel insurance in your haste to escape, says Dawn Marchand, vice-president of marketing, product and direct distribution at Toronto-based Lawyers Financial.

“Many people are planning a respite just to get away from the snow, cold and ice,” Marchand tells “There will be others who are already planning their family’s summer vacation at this time as well.”

She says travel insurance is valuable whether you’re heading south for a long weekend or planning a month’s stay abroad.

“Our insurance can protect you against a number of travel risks, including lost or stolen luggage, or a baggage delay,” says Marchand.

She says if you have a medical emergency while on your trip, having insurance may cover costly treatment bills.

“The No. 1 reason people buy travel insurance is in case of unexpected emergency medical costs,” Marchand says.

“Just having that peace of mind that you won’t have to pay out of pocket helps to alleviate stress. Coverage is for anything from breaking a bone to something as serious as a heart attack.”

Securing trip cancellation insurance for your vacation is also a good idea in case an unexpected emergency prevents you from leaving, Marchand says.

With more people considering solo travel, according to a report in The Telegraph, Lawyers Financial also provides single-coverage travel insurance, she says.

“Going solo means you don’t have any accompanying support, so if something does happen, it’s helpful to know your medical needs will be met,” Marchand says.

For those who travel frequently, multi-trip coverage may be the best option, she says.

“It makes sense if you’re planning to go away multiple times throughout the year to secure insurance once, instead of each time,” Marchand says.

“Lawyers Financial travel insurance caters to the unique needs of our clients,” she explains. “You can get single or multi-trip coverage, and then you can add in cancellation coverage or baggage loss.”

Lawyers, their staff and families can also purchase travel insurance for visitors coming to Canada for an extended stay, Marchand says.

For lawyers with a son or daughter studying abroad, she says there are also student coverage options.

“A travel insurance specialist can help determine the best policy for your travel needs,” Marchand says.

Lawyers Financial offers telephone assistance or the option to get a quote and then book online.

“You can even secure travel insurance while you’re in the airport waiting to start your trip,” she says.

Marchand says Lawyers Financial has also negotiated a 10 per cent discount off standard insurance rates from Manulife.

“The legal community has access to our top-quality travel insurance, underwritten by Manulife, and at reduced rates,” she says.
