Desmoulin to share insights on the science of violence

Geoffrey Desmoulin, principal and senior biomechanist at Vancouver-based GTD Scientific, will discuss the science of violence at the Force Science Institute's upcoming conference.

Desmoulin says attendees will increase their basic knowledge of physics at it relates to complex injury litigation involving the use of force.

“The specific manner of injury is often generalized in use of force investigations despite some detailed information from emergency medical staff and examiners,” he says.

The courts continue to limit police officers, engineers and medical professionals from giving opinions about injuries and biomechanics in the policing environment, Desmoulin says. An injury biomechanist, however, can properly address issues of biomechanics in the policing context, he adds.

Attendees will come away with an understanding of:

  • How to apply physics to use of force injury causation (biomechanics)

  • How to choose experts for use of force injury causation

  • How to achieve a better understanding of technical expert reports

  • How to better manage your resources involving a technical use of force expert

The conference takes place Oct. 15-17 at the Hilton Garden Inn Chicago O’Hare Airport, 2930 South River Rd., Des Plaines, IL.

Desmoulin's presentation will be on Oct. 15 from 9-11:45 a.m.
