Upenieks to share insights on one-judge case management
Brampton civil litigator Edwin Upenieks will participate in an upcoming Ontario Bar Association (OBA) webinar to discuss the province’s one-judge civil case management pilot.
Upenieks, partner with Lawrence, Lawrence, Stevenson LLP, says under this pilot, which will run for two years, the judge who has been assigned to case-manage an action will preside over all pre-trial hearings, case management conferences and the trial itself.
The idea behind the program is to allow the judge to become entirely familiar with the issues in the dispute, and the only exception will be the case conferences that are dedicated solely to settlement discussions, the OBA reports.
Upenieks will join Associate Chief Justice Frank N. Marrocco and Tom Curry of Lenczner Slaght LLP, to discuss how the pilot will function, including how to get your case included in it, ideal cases for inclusion, and the availability of fixed trial dates.
The webinar takes place Feb. 25 from noon to 1 p.m.
