Waddell to speak at class actions colloquium

Toronto class-action lawyer Margaret Waddell will speak at the Ontario Bar Association's 6th Annual Class Actions Colloquium.

The all-day event will be held Dec. 1 at 20 Toronto St.

Waddell, partner at Paliare Roland Rosenberg Rothstein LLP, will be one of two speakers discussing “Pre-certification Motions: Strategic Considerations.” They will look at when judges allow preliminary motions to be heard and discuss their strategic value. The speakers will delve into a variety of topics including jurisdiction motions – when they are successful and when they are not. In addition, the panel will cover summary judgment motions, as well as the extent of disclosure required on a preliminary motion, and assessing the value of motions to strike, says the Ontario Bar Association’s website.

Attendees will gain in-depth insight into the past year’s top developments in class-action law from an expert faculty of judges and lawyers – Waddell included – who are engaged in the most cutting-edge issues now being debated in trial and appellate courts across Canada.

Attendees will hear about the fallout from the Supreme Court of Canada class action 2013 trilogy and how to prepare for the emergence of new battlegrounds, as well as gain valuable perspectives from the bench from the very popular “panel of judges” as they discuss their approaches to class-action law, including their views on case management, pre-certification motions, certification, and class-action trials. Attendees will be able to take advantage of the opportunity to hear from the Law Commission of Ontario about the first proposed changes to the Class Proceedings Act since 1992 and to voice their opinions and concerns.

The sessions will provide information about legislative developments that are on the horizon, as well as why the changes are needed and their expected impact.

The event will also give attendees the opportunity to earn almost two-thirds of their professionalism credits for the year.
