Billiards with the Bar fundraiser: lawyers helping those in need

Serving more than 60,000 meals each year to people in need, the Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program is putting out a call for help to the legal community, says Toronto criminal lawyer Joseph Neuberger.

He is urging members of the bar to support the program’s latest fundraising effort, Billiards with the Bar, to be held Oct. 24 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at The Rivoli, 334 Queen St. W., in Toronto.

The event, hosted by Neuberger & Partners LLP, Hull & Hull LLP and the Toronto Lawyers Association, includes a silent auction and cash bar.

"The fourth annual Billiards with the Bar seeks to raise more than $15,000, which will go directly to those in need with only minimal overhead costs," Neuberger says. "Ninety cents of every dollar is used to help people and families in our community.

"Anyone interested in helping can purchase a ticket, sponsor a table or simply make a donation."

The Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry Program was founded by Martin Teplitsky in 1998. Teplitsky, who passed away in 2016, was a mediator-arbitrator, lawyer, teacher and community leader who saw a need and soon after the Toronto program started preparing and serving meals to the hungry in the Law Society of Upper Canada’s cafeteria at Osgoode Hall (130 Queen St. W.), says the Law Society Foundation website

The meals continue to be served there: dinner on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5 p.m., and breakfast on Thursdays at 6:45 a.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m.

Neuberger, a partner with Neuberger & Partners LLP, says the program is possible through generous donations to the Law Society Foundation and thanks to a roster of committed volunteers.

Neuberger first became involved with Toronto Lawyers Feed the Hungry when he was president of the Toronto Lawyers Association and took a lead role in fundraising for the program. His firm is an annual sponsor of the Billards with the Bar fundraiser.

"I have been working with Feed the Hungry in a fundraising capacity for more than 10 years," he says.

"The need for this program has not diminished over that time and we must remember that many of our fellow Torontonians are in desperate need of healthy and nutritious food. I wish this was not the case but it is. We all need to pull together to help and keep this outstanding program viable."

Tickets cost $90 per person or $500 per table. They are available here. All contributions of $500 or more will be acknowledged at the event and will receive a letter from the Law Society Foundation for business expense purposes.

For those who are unable to attend, online donations can also be made.
