Toronto Lawyers Association: Joan Rataic-Lang

New Year, New Targets? The Toronto Lawyers Association has the solution.

Yes, the New Year means renewal, but it also resets all those hard won targets of last year, namely your CPD totals. The Toronto Lawyers Association is here to help with a great line up of accredited Nutshells and a great offer to make attending that much simpler.

Exclusively for TLA members, for the price of five Nutshells, get them all! You read that right, purchase our CPD Unlimited package and get all your CPD at the TLA in 2018 for only $449*. Choose from a variety of practice areas and attend any or all Nutshells, as you like. You can pay for this package in one transaction or in 5 equal monthly instalments.

For those of you not familiar with the educational arm of the TLA, this tailored attitude to CPD is what a TLA Nutshell is all about: meeting and exceeding our members’ needs. TLA Nutshells run in the evening, generally last a couple of hours, and offer CPD credits in a collegial, informal atmosphere. Our seminars are designed, written and presented by professionals from the Toronto legal community.

Starting the year is a great line up of evenings, featuring some of the best legal thinkers and strategists in the Toronto community. On February 8th, first out of the gate is The Charter: Defending, Prosecuting and Theorizing. We have a Crown, a Prosecutor and a Professor discussing remedies available from the Charter in the wake of R. v Jordan

On Wednesday, February 28, Summary Judgment Motions Four Years after Hryniak, will bring another panel of experts, including a veteran motions judge and litigation counsel, to discuss their unique perspectives, information and advice.

Things shift to the solicitor side of things when on Wednesday April 11, we feature, Drafting Considerations for the Wills & Estates Lawyer: From boilerplate to bespoke. Estate planning experts will discuss everything you need to know about the careful drafting of wills for effective estate planning strategies. Takeaways include precedents, not to mention all the great practical information you’ll learn that evening.

To round off the first part of 2018, we have scheduled on April 17th, a Nutshell about one of the hottest topics to emerge in recent months, Litigation Funding for Commercial Claims in Canada. Following this Nutshell, and included in the cost, will be Wine & Cheese Soiree, demonstrating that other mandate of TLA: fostering community amongst lawyers. Meet your colleagues and enjoy this ready made opportunity for conversation and networking.

That’s just the start of the year in TLA's education intiative. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention our first social event of the year, Festivus, happening on January 25th, at Canoe. The tickets are proving very popular: its the perfect evening to get all 2017’s grievances out in the open, where they can be mocked and then forgotten. Did I mention there'll be prizes too?! See our website for  details.

There you have it; the first few months of an exciting year in education, advocacy and community for the TLA membership. We'll see you soon.
