Drafting Employment Contracts to Avoid Disputes, Thursday, November 9, 2017, 5-7pm
TLA Lawyers Lounge, 2nd Floor, 361 University Avenue Court House

The "gig economy" is becoming the rule rather than the exception. Do you find yourself counselling clients on Employment Contracts, for themselves or for their new employees? This is not something to learn on as-you-go basis.

Employment contracts represent an attempt to create certainty in an employment relationship, and to do so they must be properly drafted. Lawyers also need to understand the legal framework within which the courts operate in the employment law world. This session will provide lawyers with legal, practical, strategic and professional considerations in preparing employment contracts.

Our agenda will cover:

  • Why employment contracts are a good idea for organizations
  • How courts interpret employment contracts and what you need to minimize risk and maximize enforceability
  • What clauses employment contracts should contain and how to draft them
  • What types of clauses you may want to consider depending on the specific employee
  • What to do when dealing with unrepresented persons and conflicts of interest

The evening’s speakers include Paul S. Schwartzman, of Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP, Carly Dunster, from Turnpenney Milne LLP, and Kate Dearden, of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Our moderator will be Maureen M. Quinlan of Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP.

This Nutshell has been approved for 30 minutes of Professionalism Content and 75 minutes of Substantive Content. Register here for what will be an all encompassing discussion regarding the drafting of a solid employment contract.

This tailored attitude to CPD is what a TLA Nutshell is all about: meeting and exceeding our members’ needs.
