Former inmate had run-ins with jail staff

Toronto criminal lawyer John Rosen described a former Don Jail inmate accusing two correctional officers of viciously attacking him as a “violent, dishonest, non-compliant member of our society” with a lengthy rap sheet, the Toronto Star reports.

The trial, which began Monday, is expected to revolve around surveillance video which the Crown alleges shows Mark Moore and Ian Johnson assaulting Cosmo James in two separate incidents on June 30, 2011, the Star reports.

Moore and Johnson have pleaded not guilty to assault, the report says.

During cross-examination, Rosen, representing Moore, cited numerous run-ins James has had with jailhouse staff, the article says.

As the trial continued, a jail supervisor denied she was testifying against Moore because he failed to call her “Miss” after her sex-change operation, the Toronto Star reports.

“You were upset about Mr. (Mark) Moore calling you sir,” Rosen suggested to Andrea Roussel, the Star report says.

At the time of the alleged attack, James was in the jail serving a sentence for possession of a firearm and facing trial for possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking, the Star reports.
