Ford's lawyer a 'legal adviser:' Rosen

Toronto criminal lawyer John Rosen tells Law Times that a media expert would be helpful, if not essential, to any lawyer who is representing someone like Mayor Rob Ford these days.

“I would have gotten a media expert, especially in a situation where the client, Rob Ford, has not been charged with anything,” he tells the legal publication.

Rosen, partner at Rosen Naster LLP, says in the article that, given the absence of any charges currently, Ford requires a lawyer to sees himself/herself as a “legal adviser” to the mayor rather than a counsel for s specific case.

“I would define my role as being a legal adviser as opposed to the person who is handling the media,” he tells Law Times.

The article is a profile of Dennis Morris, who has been hired as counsel for Ford. It depicts him, through comments made by friends and colleagues, as a “low-key people’s person.”

Law Times quotes a number of well-known Toronto lawyers who highlight Morris’s attributes and accomplishments over the years.

Of Ford’s choice for legal representation, the article states that “it’s no wonder a politician who often paints himself in that same light would choose him as his counsel.”

Rosen tells the publication that some lawyers found it “surprising” that Ford didn’t go to the “usual suspects” on Bay Street to hire a lawyer.

Rosen, who has known Morris since his call to the bar in the early 1970s, says in the article that the mayor’s counsel has always been someone who works on his own rather than forming partnerships with colleagues.
