"Build a Better Articling Student": TLA's Nutshell Seminars for students starting their articling.

Big Bay Street law firms and accounting houses traditionally set aside a number of days to help their articling students with the transition from school to office. A varied support staff of administrative types and research professionals work to orientate them to office culture and reinforce skills learned in law school.

The Toronto Lawyers Association's Articling Student Head Start Program, grew out of this desire to give students articling with mid-size or boutique firms, Legal Aid, or solo practitioners the same jump start as those working in larger firms.  Having lawyers share their experiences with office culture , professional advice and expectations helps to foster better work habits, thereby giving students a greater chance of success. We wanted that for students who don't have the benefit of that kind of access.

To that end, we have organized a series of Nutshells where students and lawyers have told us the greatest need exists:

Speaking at each of these Nutshells are TLA members who have proven track records and many years of experience. Students who attend discover many side benefits;

  • an opportunity to ask questions they may be more reluctant to voice in their work environment
  • bonding with their peers over anecdotes, hard learned lessons and sharing research tips in Head Start
  • Wine & Cheese soiree following Masters' Motions, allowing them to chat with their peers and speakers, Masters they are likely to meet in the future in a much more formal setting
  • having examples of their legal writing constructively analysed by lawyers of long standing

These Nutshells are open to Articling Students (and in one instance, new lawyers). Members benefit from reduced cost. Spots are filling quickly. Register soon to avoid disappointment.

This tailored attitude to education is what a TLA Nutshell is all about. TLA Nutshells usually run in the evening, last a couple of hours, and offer CPD credits in a collegial, informal atmosphere. Our seminars are designed, written and presented by professionals from the Toronto community. Join us for interesting topics and great conversations.
