New Ottawa firm provides estate, real estate expertise

Ottawa lawyer Tanya L. Carlton is pleased to announce the launch of her firm, telling AdvocateDaily.com she will be focusing her expertise on assisting clients with real estate and wills and estates issues.

Carlton hung out her own shingle in February, after working for several years at two law firms in the Ottawa area.

Called to the bar in 2013, she spent the earlier part of her working life as a teacher, then managed a business while raising a family.

Carlton says it was her time spent as a municipal town councillor in Renfrew, Ont. that really sparked her interest in legal and political issues. The role of administering governance and policy direction to town staff got her thinking about law school.

“I had always thought about going back to school once my children were older. I really enjoyed my time spent as a councillor and I thought, ‘Why don’t I apply to law school?’ So I did and was accepted to the University of Ottawa,” she explains.

Upon graduation, Carlton articled and worked as a solicitor at Carters Professional Corporation in Ottawa. It was there she really cut her teeth in the area of charity and not-for-profit law. After almost two years there, she then joined Drache Aptowitzer LLP  — where she worked for almost two years before launching her own firm.

While Carlton enjoyed law firm life and the work she was doing, she found herself craving the independence of owning her own business and the increased client interaction that goes along with it

“I’ve always had independence, but I really enjoy working with people. Much of the legal work I did previously was happening over the phone,” she says. “By running my own firm, I get more of that one-on-one time with my clients. If I’m doing a real estate deal, I want to meet with my client in person.”

A solicitor at heart, Carlton offers legal services in the areas of real estate, wills and estates, as well as some charity and not-for-profit law out of her office in the rapidly growing neighbourhood of Barrhaven.

“It’s exciting but a big adjustment,” she says.

The firm is located at 201-240 Kennevale Dr., in Nepean, Ont. Email tcarlton@tlclegal.ca for more information.
