Carlton named president of Lupus Canada

Ottawa lawyer Tanya L. Carlton has been elected president of Lupus Canada, a charitable organization that has personal meaning for her.

For the past year, Carlton held the position of vice-president. Lupus Canada is a national voluntary organization dedicated to improving the lives of people living with systemic lupus erythematosus through advocacy, education, public awareness, support and research.

Although Carlton is busy running her own recently-launched law firm — with a focus on real estate, wills and estates, as well as some charity and not-for-profit law — she tells AdvocateDaily.com that making time to volunteer is important.

“I have systemic lupus erythematosus and discoid lupus,” she says. “I was diagnosed when I was in law school in 2009-2010, so it took me an extra year to finish up my law degree part time.”

After a few years of getting her lupus under control, Carlton says she is now in a position to give back to the community both professionally and personally.

According to Lupus Canada, the chronic disease has a variety of symptoms caused by inflammation in one or more parts of the body. It is estimated that it affects more than one in 1,000 Canadians.
